Past Perfect Simple

Use
The past perfect simple is used to express an action in the past which happened before another action in the past.

e.g. When the police arrived, the criminal had escaped.
The criminal escaped before the police arrived, which means they didn’t catch him.

Past Perfect Simple

The criminal had killed 20 people when he committed suicide.
We use past perfect to make clear that one event or action happened before another in the past.

Past Perfect Continuous

Study this example situations
When the kids came into the house, their clothes were dirty, their hair was untidy and one of them had a black eye. They had been fighting.
The action:they were fighting/ The result: their clothes were dirty,their hair was untidy and one them had a black eye.
1. We use past perfect continuous for an action which lasted for some time in the past and whose result was visible in the past.
Jamal was exhausted when he arrived. He had been working for 8 hours.
2. We use past perfect continuous to put an emphasis on the duration of an action which started and finished in the past before another past action.
